Faith Communities and Service Providers Working Together to Support Victims of Sexual and Domestic Violence

For many victims who seek services for domestic or sexual violence, faith is a critical resource, crucial to their identity and community, and an element in decision-making and healing. At Safe Havens, we believe that faith communities can be a resource for these victims. Safe Havens provides training, resources, and technical assistance to help build a network of support for faith-based victims and survivors.

Resources for
Advocates & Faith Leaders

The Office on Violence Against Women has funded the development of Pieces of a Bigger Picture: Faith Communities and Service Providers Working Together to Support Victims of Sexual and Domestic Violence. These resources were designed to:

  •  help advocates reach out to faith leaders and faith communities,

  •  help faith leaders support victims in their congregations, and

  •  help advocates and faith leaders build and strengthen partnerships to support victims together.

Praying Hands

These resources are designed to help faith leaders and communities promote awareness about sexual and domestic violence and break the silence about what might be happening to victims and survivors in a faith community. These resources will also help mobilize communities and provide information about available services.

Pieces of a Bigger Picture: Training Model

Faith Communities and Service Providers Working Together to Support Victims of Sexual and Domestic Violence

This training model includes 10 interactive training exercises. The goal of these exercises is to help faith leaders better understand trauma, power and control, victim-centered responses, and other issues that will help them support victims and provide referrals to services.

Pieces of a Bigger Picture: Partnership Guide

This Guide to Building Partnerships between Service Providers and Faith Communities to Support Domestic and Sexual Violence Victims and Survivors will provide insight and address some best practices on how to build long-term, trusting partnerships between you and your faith leaders and faith communities.
